Jerusalem Foundation Supports Citywide Art Restoration Project

Teddy Kollek, the “Great Builder” of modern Jerusalem and founder of the Jerusalem Foundation, envisioned a city brimming with artistic creation and abounding with creativity. A particular emphasis of this vision, which is implemented by the Jerusalem Foundation, is to support projects that inspire creativity and productivity in the next generation. What better opportunity is there to stimulate artistic imagination among youth than in the school setting, where thousands of young Jerusalemites spend (perhaps begrudgingly) most of their waking hours? To this end, over the past 50 years, the Foundation has supported the creation of dozens of art installations and sculptures by leading Jerusalem artists in "open air" spaces at schools throughout Jerusalem.

 

Recently, a team of artists, led by the Jerusalem Municipality's art advisor David Suzana, restored dozens of sculptures to their former glory with the support of funding from the Jerusalem Foundation. The sculptures are located at schools throughout the city, some of which include the David & Paula Ben-Gurion Elementary School in Rechavia;the Saul Hirschel (Guatemala) Elementary School in Kiryat Menachem, the Menashe Elyashar School in Ramat Sharet and schools throughout Neve Yaakov. The sculptures explore numerous and diverse themes, including literature and Israeli history, incorporate various dimensions and angles and are made from a broad range of materials.

 

The sculpture makeovers may not be dramatic, but even a slight alteration to the landscape one has grown accustomed to can elicit a reaction, and even spark conversation and curiosity. This is the hope – that students and other members of the school community will discover or rediscover  these works of art as they make their way into the school on any given morning.
