Israel Minister of Education Visits Max Rayne School

On January 17, 2017, Israel Minister of Education, Naftali Bennet, along with the State Comptroller and an extensive contingent of Ministry of Education officials,  visited the Max Rayne Hand in Hand School for Bilingual Education. Their goal – to learn about the school’s unique model for education toward shared living.

The visit came in the wake of the State Comptroller’s September 2016 report detailing the Ministry of Education’s failure to implement its own policies that seek to promote programs for dialogue and shared living, and called on the Ministry to improve its efforts. The Hand in Hand model was even mentioned specifically in the report, as an example to be followed.

The visit was quite positive. The minister sat in on a 5th grade religious heritage class and a 4th grade math class and engaged in some fascinating conversations with school students. Teachers described some of the ongoing complex issues that are dealt that are consistently part of the school’s continuous Jewish-Arab dialogue. When asked by the Minister what needs to be done to combat racism, the school principals answered, “When you learn about the other, together, racism disappears on its own. We don’t need to ‘deal with racism.’ Real and daily encounters with the “other” directly lead us to fairness and equality.”

The Jerusalem Foundation has supported the Max Rayne Hand in Hand School for Bilingual Education, both in programming and in its capital projects, since the school’s inception in 1998. The school is an integral part of the Foundation’s mission to shape a modern and vibrant city by creating opportunities in education and shared for all of its population groups. We are proud of the school’s accomplishments as a groundbreaker in Jerusalem, and as a model for bilingual, multicultural education in Israel.
