Dutch volunteers from the “Christians for Israel” organization participate in the Foundation’s "Building Community" project in Kiryat HaYovel

Approximately 20 volunteers from all over the Netherlands arrived to Stern Street in the Kiryat HaYovel neighborhood to assist in the "Building Community" project initiated by the Jerusalem Foundation for summer 2017. As part of their volunteer work, they are painting a 9-story building on Stern Street, sprucing up the "Edible Forest Garden" at the end of the street, and assisting in the neighborhood kindergarten. This is the sixth year Jerusalem has been graced by the generosity of the Dutch volunteers. During their summer vacation, these volunteers, some students and some professionals in their twenties, come with a sense of mission and commitment to engage in grassroots urban renewal alongside the residents of Kiryat HaYovel. Together, they renovate the old buildings and public spaces that date back to the 1950s and have been neglected for years.

The “Building Community” project is national in scope and has been operating in cooperation with the Jerusalem Foundation and the Yuvalim Community Council for 6 years. The community center, together with residents and volunteers, builds, repairs, paints, plants and improves the neighborhood’s buildings, and in the process, they strengthen a shared communal sense of responsibility, creating a vibrant caring community of residents.

Since the project began, about 100 private apartments, 20 stairwells and courtyards have been renovated, more than 20 new gardens, lawns and parks have been planted, and committees of active and caring residents have been formed in the neighborhood.

Tenants host the Dutch volunteers for food breaks, and often join them in upgrading a building that has not been to uched in years.
