About the project
Supportive Communities for the Disabled is an innovative program developed by the Joint Distribution Committee Israel and Ilan that provides a comprehensive system of services for people with physical, sensory and emotional disabilities living at home. The program provides daily contact, help with home repairs, an emergency alarm system, home visits, and social and cultural programs at activity centers. The first such center was established in 2002 at the Adi Yaffe Gilo Community Center to serve disabled residents of southern Jerusalem. A second center was established in 2004 at the Jacob & Sarah Feldman Community Center to serve residents of northern Jerusalem. These two facilities serve approximately 120 people. The program was based on the successful Supportive Communities for Senior Citizens program and is being replicated in other Israeli cities.
