About the project

The East Jerusalem Breast Cancer Education Project was designed to increase awareness and to stress the importance of examinations in the early detection of breast cancer among east Jerusalem residents. Findings have shown that while the rate of contracting breast cancer is relatively low among Arab women, there is a higher probability of mortality due to a lack of awareness of the importance of early detection and treatment. The project, which was organized by the Foundation with the Association for the Advancement of Women’s Health, the Israel Cancer Association and Hadassah Hospital, involved an intense information campaign, training courses for practitioners working in east Jerusalem neighborhoods, and “health days” featuring talks by doctors and nurses and instruction on self-examination. The project ran for two years, and involved an estimated 2,000 women each year.
