About the project
The Abdullah Ibn Al-Hussein Secondary School was opened in 1990 to provide academic and vocational high school studies together for the first time for east Jerusalem students. The school is named for King Hussein’s grandfather, the first king of Jordan, Abdullah I, who ruled 1946-51. The Jerusalem Foundation renovated and expanded the school’s vocational facilities in 1995. Work included demolition of a derelict, single-story structure, construction of a two-story technical wing to house a computer workshop, automotive simulation room, electrical laboratory and drafting room, renovations to the metalwork and electrical facilities in the existing building, and purchase of new equipment. The project enabled the school to broaden its range of studies and to create a complementary advanced vocational studies institute, the ORT Technical College, which had more than 400 students enrolled by 1997. The Jerusalem Foundation has since supported special classes and scholarships.
