About the project
The Rebuilders of Jerusalem Garden was originally established in 1978 and is located between Jaffa Gate and Mount Zion, just outside the Old City walls. Creation of the garden included excavation and preservation of the southwestern section of the walls and installation of lawns, a stone-paved footpath and lighting. The garden was designed by Lepa Yahalom and Dan Tzur. This garden is used regularly by schools and other tour groups as a shady rest stop when visiting the old city.
With the need to conserve archeological remains at the Rebuilders of Jerusalem Garden (including the walls of the Old City), a new renovation and rejuvenation of the Garden and walls began in 2009 converting the existing trail into a scenic promenade.
The walls and archeological remains were stabilized and repaired, preserving the Herodian plaster work. The existing footpath was restored and made mobility accessible. Shaded sitting areas, new handrails, explanatory signs, activity stops and lighting were installed.
