About the project
The Rosenwald Park is located in front of the Joint Distribution Committee Israel office. The park includes a lawn with an enivronmental sculpture by Israeli artist Dani Karavan (b. 1930, Tel Aviv) .Karavan created the bas-reliefs for the Knesset, but is best defined by his large-scale, site specific sculptures.This sculpture consists of two stone structures connected by a water channel. One is a dome of dressed stones with a run of stairs; the other is a semi-circular plane of polished stones with engraved time marks.The observer who stands between the two becomes the gnomon of a sun dial, casting a shadow and giving the time. The sculpture represents many characteristics of Jerusalem and its environs: the dome prominent in structures in the Old City, watering channels in the agricultural areas, the play of light and shadow upon buildings, and different stone-cutting styles.
