About the project
The penguin exhibit is a gift of Philip Zaidenberg. Normally one thinks of penguins as living in cold climates but this type of penguin comes from South Africa. This exhibit is particularly fascinating for children, as it is possible to see these funny flightless birds swim and glide under the water due to a reinforced glass window which reveals the bottom of their pool, they can stay submerged for up to two minutes at a time, which give ample opportunity to observe their diving antics especially when fish is involved.
The Blackfooted Penguin or Jackass Penguin, are found on the South Western Coast of Africa so they feel at home in Jerusalem’s climate. They are only penguin to actually breed in Africa, Their life span is between 8 to 10 years, the males are larger than the females and they bond for life. The name “Jackass”
Comes from the call they make, which resembles a braying donkey!
