About the project
A Jewish cemetery extends over the southern expanse of the western slope of the Mount of Olives, due to the tradition that resurrection of the dead will begin here. During the 19 years of Jordanian rule (1948-1967), the Jerusalem-Jericho Road was built over the graves, gravestones were broken, uprooted and used for building. After 1967, the road was closed, gravestones repaired and burials began again. In 1974, the Jerusalem Foundation supported the restoration of the grave of Eliezer Ben Yehuda, the father of the modern Hebrew language. The gravesite is a family plot surrounded by a decorative iron fence.
