About the project

The Jerusalem Institute of Contemporary Music was founded in 1988 to bring contemporary music to a wider public audience. The institute, directed by American-borm composer and musician Stephen Horenstein, offers concerts throughout Israel and abroad through its professional New Music Ensemble and provides individual and ensemble lessons for children aged 7-18 through its School of Contemporary Music. The institute goes beyond a typical music school to embrace all musical styles, to view music as both an avenue for self-expression and social interaction, and to offer unique programs to reach abused, disabled and at-risk children through music. The Institute is based at the Sally & Philip W. Lown Youth & Community Center. The Jerusalem Foundation helped establish the institute and has supported renovations, equipment, scholarships and activities.
