About the project
Manger Square in Bethlehem, just south of Jerusalem, is one of the holiest sites in the Christian world. Christian tradition holds that Jesus Christ was born here, on the site now marked by the Church of the Nativity. The Church of St. Catherine and the Mosque of Omar also surround the Square. The Jerusalem Foundation supported the development of plans by US architect Phillip Johnson in 1976 for improvements to the square and supported stone paving at this major attraction to Christian pilgrims visiting Jerusalem.
