About the project

The Mordechai & Esther Garden is heavily used garden with walking paths, seating areas and landscaping located along the outside of the Old City walls between Damascus Gate and Herod’s Gate, at the site of a former Jordanian park. Work to create the garden included clearing the entrance to Zedekiah’s Cave (also known as Solomon’s Quarries and Suleiman’s Cave), thought to be the source of the white limestone used in building the First Temple, the passageway through which the Judean King Zedekiah tried to flee from the conquering Nebuchadnezzar in 587 BCE, and a site important to Freemasons, who claim that they descend from Solomon’s masons.
