It has been two years since the tragic loss of Shai Doron z”l, yet his visionary legacy lives on in Jerusalem. The man who saw opportunities when others could see only obstacles, recognized a groundbreaking way forward for shared society in the aftermath of October 7th, 2023, and the subsequent war: building up determined and committed leadership made up of all the diverse communities across Jerusalem. These leaders, with proven experience in the field worked individually to improve access and opportunities within their communities, and today thanks to the Shai Doron Leadership Fellows program they work as a network of people balancing their differences in order to make Jerusalem stronger and better for future generations.
Shai passed away before he could see this vision materialize, but with the help of friends of the Jerusalem Foundation worldwide, the first cohort of the Shai Doron Leadership Fellows was launched in 2025 and the next cohort is set to join them in 2027. The program continues Shai’s vision of leadership and diversity and honors his memory.
The Jerusalem Foundation is further honoring Shai’s legacy by establishing the Shai Doron Center for Leadership and the Humanities at Mishkenot Sha’ananim. Mishkenot, an iconic Jerusalem landmark symbolizing renewal and advancement of society, carries huge potential as a spiritual and cultural bridge that addresses 21st century needs. In memory of Shai z”l, it will become a home and platform for the next generation of leaders, artists and thinkers in Israel; a place for training and enriching dedicated future leaders who will transform the face of modern Jerusalem, alongside continued thought provoking, meaningful cultural and intellectual programming.
Following an extensive renovation of the facility, the Center will host all leadership programs initiated and established by the Jerusalem Foundation, including the Shai Doron Leadership Fellows, as well as local and national initiatives such as community center staff development and youth movements, creating a shared space for cultivating civil leadership citywide. Mishkenot’s array of cultural, thought-provoking, interdisciplinary programming and events will continue, enhanced by the infrastructure renewal, and allow Mishkenot to continue to lead the way as a Center for ideas, creativity and local Jerusalem leadership.
These two outstanding initiatives represent Shai’s spirit, vision and legacy, and continue the remarkable role that Shai fulfilled in Jerusalem. While Shai Doron z”l is no longer with us, his memory lives on and his work will continue to impact the future generations of the city.
