About the project

The Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu is an Assumptionist church and monastery that stands outside the Old City walls between the eastern slope of Mount Zion and the village of Silwan. The church was built in 1931 at the site where several churches have been built over the centuries to recall Jesus’ trial before Caiaphas and Peter’s denial. (The name Gallicantu is Latin for cock crow, referring to Jesus’ warning to Peter that he would deny him three times before the cock crow.) The church features cisterns and storage rooms of the Herodian period, and a stepped walk that leads towards Mount Zion. The Jerusalem Foundation supported the preparation of a feasibility study for the restoration of the church in 1994.
