About the project

The Jerusalem Municipal Youth Orchestra was founded in 1959. As many as 500 children each year participated in the orchestra, the majority of them coming from families who could not afford private music lessons. The orchestra program included individual study, group lessons, a marching band and more. Until 1975, tuition, loan of instruments and activities were funded completely by the municipality. The Jerusalem Foundation provided funding to periodically purchase new instruments. Since 1979, the orchestra has made its home at the Louis & Tillie Alpert Youth Music Center of Jerusalem.
