About the project

The Shmu’el Hanavi Community Center serves the Ramat Eshkol, Sanhedria and Ma’alot Dafna neighborhoods of northern Jerusalem. The facility was established at the former Moriah School when the nearby Fred & Gerta Pomerantz Youth & Community Center relocated to the Ramot neighborhood. The Jerusalem Foundation has supported several physical improvement projects at the center, including the re-establishment of the Achtentuch Senior Citizen’s Center at the community center in 1990, renovations, including outfitting a fitness center and renovating a reference library, in 1997, and creation of Gan Hayovel, an adventure playground built outside the center by the Foundation’s New York New Leadership Group and neighborhood residents in 1998. The Foundation also has supported several programs at the center, including its learning centers, one each for elementary school children, high school children and new immigrants, that offer individual attention and special assistance with homework, matriculation exams, employment training for at-risk youth and more.
