About the project

Corob Walk is the main pedestrian thoroughfare connecting the City Center to Jaffa Gate. The walk extends from Jaffa Gate to Zahal Square, then turns the corner to reach the New Gate around the Old City walls. Construction of the walk, which was designed by Eldar Sharon, Jeremy Epstein & Mario Yudelevitch, included demolition of derelict buildings, paving and landscaping. In 1981, the Jerusalem Foundation erected a stone sculpture along the walk that is one of a pair of sculptures of biblical verses created by Jerusalem-based sculptor Daniel Kafri (b. 1945, Czechoslovakia). In 1997, the Jerusalem Foundation supported renovation of Corob Walk, including installation of new paving, stonework, a watering system, sitting areas and landscaping. Also at that time, parts of the walk were removed and rebuilt for archeological investigations in connection with the nearby Mamilla development project. In 2006, the walk was again altered due to construction of the light railway nearby, and in 2007 was partially renovated as part of the adjacent Zahal Square renovation project.
